Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ had a big opening release in China, with a score of $44.6 million (RMB317 million) in mainland Chinese cinemas between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. That accounts for a nearly 70% share of the country’s weekend box office.

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’, directed by Adam Wingard, has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 54% and an audience score of 92%. The movie is the sequel to 2021’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ and marks the fifth installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. Per Imax, the film earned $7.5 million from Chinese box office sales, representing nearly 17% of its Chinese weekend earnings.

Global cinemas the film earned $64.1 million, a significant leap from the $39.5 million earned in the previous weekend. ‘Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire’ has shown a commendable performance in the post-pandemic era by becoming the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood title. 

‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ fell from first place to second, earning $5.8 million, a 60% decrease from its opening weekend. After ten days in Chinese cinemas, it has made a total of $34.5 million.
