China Box Office: The Boy and The Heron Reaches $93 Million After Second Weekend

Oscar-winning Japanese animated movie, “The Boy and the Heron,” continues its successful run at the Chinese box office, holding onto the top spot for a second consecutive weekend.

Hayao Miyazaki’s movie experienced a significant drop in its second non-holiday weekend, earning only $12.8 million (RMB90.6 million), according to data from consulting firm Artisan Gateway. After 12 days of its release in China, the movie has now earned a total of $93.8 million (RMB666), making it the highest-grossing territory for the film despite its late release.

Studio Ghibli’s “The Boy and the Heron” follows a boy named Mahito Maki, who moves to the countryside after the tragic loss of his mother. While exploring his new surroundings, he discovers an abandoned tower near his home. Upon entering the tower, he is transported to a fantastical world where he meets a talking grey heron.

Legendary Entertainment’s China wing, Legendary East, grossed $10.7 million in its third weekend, with “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire” holding the No.2 spot at the China box office. This brings cumulative counts to $110 million. The film grossed $1.1M in China on Imax screens, bringing its total Imax revenue to $14.8M.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” takes the No.3 spot with a $2.5 million gross on its fourth weekend; it now has a cumulative total of $45.6 million in China. “Dwelling by the West Lake,” a Chinese crime drama directed by Gu Xiaogang, continues at the No.4 spot, it earned $2.4 million on its second weekend in cinemas, for a cumulative total of $13 million. The Chinese film “Viva La Vida” bounced back to the No. 4 spot and earned $2.1M over the weekend, totalling $32.4M since February, including March previews.
