A24’s action thriller upcoming “Civil War” heading to SXSW, which features Academy Award-nominated Kirsten Dunst as the lead, is also very well known for her work on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy as well as the sci-fi drama Melancholia.
Alex Garland, the director of “Annihilation” and “Men,” both wrote and directed the movie. The film is about a group of journalists who journey through a deeply divided United States. This is Garland’s second time at SXSW after the North American debut of his first film, the sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina,” in 2015.
The news has been confirmed by SXSW, with their programmer, Claudette Godfrey, saying she “cannot imagine a better place” than SXSW for the debut of “Civil War”. The SXSW festival will be taking place from March 8 to March 16. Additionally, Netflix’s series, “3 Body Problem,” created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the makers of “Game of Thrones,” will be opening the festival.
Set in the near future, a new Civil War breaks out in the United States between the core government and the “Western Forces” led by California and Texas. The Florida Alliance also joins the insurrection against the government. Despite the President’s promise to end the uprising quickly, reporters covering the war suggest a different story. They claim that the government is using airstrikes on domestic soil, and the rebellious Western Forces are approaching the United States capital of Washington D.C.
”Civil War” will be released in theaters on April 12. The cast includes Nick Offerman as the President of the United States, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny and Jesse Plemons.
