GKIDS has released the first teaser for “Ghost Cat Anzu,” an upcoming animated film directed by Yoko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita. GKIDS has acquired North American rights while partnering with Paris-based Charades for international sales.

Japan’s Shin-Ei Animation has partnered with France’s Miyu Productions to co-produce “Ghost Cat Anzu,” a new anime series. Shin-Ei Animation is known for producing popular anime franchises like “Doraemon” and “Crayon Shin-chan.”

The animated movie Ghost Cat Anzu is an adaption of the manga by Takashi Imashiro and with the screenplay by Shinji Imaoka. The characters are created using 2D digital animation and rotoscoping techniques. The French studios were responsible for decorating and coloring the characters. Additionally, live-action shots of the actors Mirai Moriyama (Anzu) and Noa Goto (Karin) were transformed into animation using rotoscoping.

Synopsis of the story: Karin, 11 years old, is abandoned by her father at her grandfather’s house, the monk of a small town in the Japanese countryside. Her grandfather asks Anzu, his jovial and helpful although rather capricious ghost cat, to look after her. The meeting of their strong characters causes sparks, at least at the beginning…
