Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had previews on Thursday at 3 PM in about 3,400 locations and earned $8 million. This makes it the second-highest preview earnings for a movie in Legendary’s Monsterverse after the 2014 Godzilla, which earned $9.3 million. Earlier this week, the domestic box office projections for Godzilla vs. Kong were reported to be $50 million.

Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Gxthe second worst reviews for the Monsterverse at 56%, while RT audiences scored it at 92%, making it the highest-rated film in the Legendary Monsterverse franchise.

On Friday, GxK is expected to play in 3,850 theaters, boosted by Imax, PLFs, ScreenX, D-Box, and 4DX. There will also be some sharing of Imax auditoriums with Legendary and Warner’s Dune: Part Two. Currently, Dune: Part Two is the highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far, with $239.3M in the US and nearly $600M worldwide.

Warners and Legendary’s fifth installment in the MonsterVerse series, following the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, directed by Adam Wingard. In this film, Kong and Godzilla team up to stop a mysterious threat from destroying the planet. The highly anticipated film showcases an epic battle between the two iconic kaijus with the promising thrillier adventure for fans of the franchise. Stars returning for this installment include Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle. Dan Stevens joined the franchise as a new lead.
