Mahito Maki is a 12-year-old boy who lost his mother during the war. After her death, he moved to the countryside, where his family estate was attended by several old maids. A series of mysterious and strange things start happening, leading him to secluded and ancient tower, a home to the mischievous grey heron.
Suddenly, when Mahito’s stepmother disappears, he follows a heron towards the tower and ventures into a fantastic world shared by the living and dead. There deaths come to an end, and life finds a new beginning. Heron guides him on his epic journey into the new world, Mahito must uncover secrets of the world and himself.
