TOM TYKWER’S “THE LIGHT”: FIRST LOOK IMAGE REVEALED 

The “Babylon Berlin” director returns to the big screen.

The first look of “The Light” has been revealed. Tom Tykwer’s return to the big screen after seven years of break as the co-witter and director of the famous television series of four seasons of acclaimed period drama Babylon Berlin.

Earlier this week, Tykwer’s production house X Filme Creative Pool, German distributors X Verleih, and Beta Cinema announced the global sales rights for their upcoming project, The Light. Beta Cinema will sell the film in all territories except German-speaking Europe, France, and North America. The film’s preselling will commence at the European Film Market in Berlin later this month.

“The Light” is a present-day drama set in Berlin that portrays the struggles of a modern family on the brink of collapse yet also in search of new beginnings. It deals with the major issues of our times in a constantly changing world.

Cast stars of “The Light” include Lars Eidinger (Dying, Persian Lessons, Personal Shopper, The Clouds of Sils Maria), Nicolette Krebitz (AEIOU and Wild), Elke Biesendorfer, Julius Gause and Elyas Eldridge as the Engels family.

Tala al Deen portrays Farrah as an enigmatic Syrian woman who becomes the Engels’ housekeeper. The Engels are a middle-class German family whose household is gradually falling apart. Despite the Engels’ apparent lack of cohesion, Farrah’s presence will unexpectedly challenge their emotional stability.

“The Light” is co-produced by ZDF, ARP Séléction, Gold Rush Pictures, Gretchenfilm and D.A. Filmproduktion, and is penned by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), the German Federal Film Board (FFA), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

Tykwer’s directional projects include “Run Lola Run” (1998), “Heaven” (2002), “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” (2006) and “The International” (2009). He collaborated with The Wachowskis as co-director for “Cloud Atlas” (2012), starring Tom Hanks and the Netflix series “Sense 8” (2015-2018), and worked as a composer on the score for Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix Resurrections” (2021).
